A close friend of mine asked me a question that got me thinking, why did I choose to major in Engineering? While growing up I always talked about becoming a successful engineer someday and here I was now, following my dream. Since being a kid I remember my parents always telling me to follow my dream and never let anything get in the way of it.? I remember being told and acknowledge that the sciences are for the smart students while Art subject are for the lazier students. As a result, students are gradually becoming less interested in Liberal Arts. People have chosen Science subjects over Art subjects because they believe that less intelligent students study arts, getting a good job is difficult in the arts field, and they are not willing to commit the time and money needed to study arts. In the article The Liberal Arts: Preserving Humanity, Jennifer Urbanek talks about how Liberal Arts has lost popularity due to peoples increased interest in modern activities. She also talks about how people want to get rid of Liberal Arts courses and focus on areas of study that lead to careers with a high paying salary. She then expands on what has lead to the decline of liberal art studies and it gaining a negative reputation (1-4). In Stanly Fishs article, The Last Professor, he states that people are being na? ve to assume that the liberal art crisis is a short term discrepancy. He talks about how this has been happening for a long time and that we are unable to stop it from happening. Stanley than goes on to talk about how timing is a great issue when studying liberal arts and how being born too late or too early is a factor (1-2). The first reason that liberal arts have been decreasing in popularity and facing a disaster is due to the people being money-oriented. Therefore individuals are always trying to study a course that will enable them to get a well paying job in the future, which causes them not to follow their dreams. The terrible stereotype of the starving artist has lead to frighten people to do so (Urbanek 1). In todays world people value being rich more than having an education in a field of their interest. People generally go into fields that have higher salaries and not study for the sake of being passionate and interested in the subject. I had a friend who was actually planning to major in women studies but after doing research and communication she had change her mind as she was afraid of not having a solid cushioning career to fall back on (Urbanek 2). Even though woman studies help develop critical thinking and writing skills they still have limited job opportunities in the future. The second reason for lost interest in liberal arts is the fact that it is more time consuming and expensive than majoring in other fields. People no longer bother with Liberal Art subjects such as Philosophy, Sociology and Dance (Urbanek 2). Those who gain a degree in humanities have spent more time and money than students who have achieved a degree in Science, and are considered to be wasting time upon dead languages (Carnegie qtd. in Fish). Also some liberal arts subjects require costly investments on equipments even before you can have any sort of education. Therefore only people who plan their college experience according to their own interest are continuing with the study of liberal arts (Urbanek 2). The last reason why liberal arts are being ignored is due to the fact that they are underestimated compared to other majors. Nowadays, people who study Liberal arts are assumed to not be as intelligent as students who are in science or business majors. For example, in my case, my parents and relatives were very proud that I was studying to become a mechanical engineer. It always made me wonder if they would feel the same way if I had decided to major in humanities.? In Iran students have to choose when entering high school if they want to major in Science, Business or Arts. The majority of the students go for the sciences even if they do not have any interest in this field. This is due to the pressure the family exerts on them. This had lead to a lot of problems since majority of them end up not getting into university due to the high competition in this field. Therefore many of them end up being uneducated even though these students have a special aptitude for liberal arts. In conclusion, the decrease in study of liberal arts looks serious even though humanities professors like to think that this is a temporary imbalance and talk about ways of redressing it (Fish 1). The recent education system has shown that interest in liberal arts is neglected even though it helps provide intellectual flexibility, skills in self expression, and a universal understanding of diversity (Urbanek 2-3). Once upon a time notable scholars were studying the arts, reading and writing about history and sociology, understanding the world through education. We should be thankful for the developments Science and Business have brought to our world but is it worth loosing what was once important? Science and Business progressions have brought efficiency and effectiveness into our lifestyles which people are now incorporating into their education programs. Rather than devoting a life time to perfecting their understanding of subject students are choosing to study what they are not interested in to save time and money. The Roma’s origins were for a long time both a mystery and an excuse for their marginalization and mistreatment. Today they are generally accepted to have originated in the Indian subcontinent, based on linguistic and genetic evidence 1. This, at least to some degree, arises from the complex, confused, and often conflicting ways they are regarded and regard themselves. They have never been seen as full-fledged members of the communities in which they reside, despite having, in some cases, lived there for centuries. They have in many cases not regarded themselve s as members of the communities where they reside, retaining their Roma identity as their primary identity2. Of these, none necessarily are congruent with the self-definition of identity of the Roma’s neighbors, who consider themselves â€Å"native† to a region or nation. The view that the â€Å"self-identified† natives hold of the Roma has been consistently pejorative over the millennium during which they have been in contact with Europeans. It is not difficult to understand why. Differences in language, religious traditions, skin color, and customs, and a nomadic way of life all contributed to the Roma’s appearance of ‘otherness’. Added to these disturbing features has been the threatening nature of the internal â€Å"code† attributed to the Roma.3 Is it any wonder that the insular, superstitious, monolithically Catholic or Orthodox communities of Europe and Eastern Europe, eager to recapture the civil order and peace of the golden a ge of the Roman Empire 4 have unfortunately regarded the â€Å"the Roma as a kind of natural disaster from which they must protect themselves†? Their response was to exclude, marginalize, isolate, exploit, or attempt to annihilate the Roma. There seems to have been a brief remission in practical economic discrimination during the Soviet’s state-controlled universal employment. When this ended, the Roma were first fired, and ancient bigotries re-emerged. Today, measures from a de facto withholding of medical treatment from anyone without proper papers , to a literal wall, attempt to keep the Roma separate from non-Roma. While the non-Roma often can point to specific behaviors or characteristics that they attribute to the Roma which would make them undesirable neighbors, the response of the non-Roma is so powerful and pervasive that another set of reasons needs to be invoked to explain it.Advertising Looking for research paper on geography? In many human societies, there is a duality: us versus them, family versus non-family, people one marries versus people one fights with, tribe versus enemy, native versus foreign-born, and many other possible alternatives. In Bauman’s formulation, the â€Å"Other’ in the modern state is anyone that is ambiguous, or self-defining, or resisting the definition imposed by the state, and who fits in neither the category of friend or of foe . Such individuals or groups occupy a mental space that makes people feel uncomfortable, queasy, and uncertain. They are neither one thing nor another, and resist categorization, therefore they defy expectations. The Roma are a quintessentially self-defining group, who in many respects fulfill this formulation of the ‘Other’. Consider: They come from elsewhere, but have done so, in many cases, so long ago th at the arrival is a forgotten event, and yet they remain visibly ‘not from here’. They have resisted the usual routes of assimilation into a host population. For example, they have intermarried to some extent, but only with great resistance and disapproval by their own community. They have in some cases elected not to remain in one place, even when this was legal, and on the other hand, they have settled in places where they have no rights of tenure. All these characteristics, and more, are in conflict with the modern state, according to Bauman. The state in modern times can be construed to be organized specifically to â€Å"eliminate ambivalence† . The Roma are the ultimate ambivalent group: to move or stay, to work or to receive the dole, for example. Thus, both individuals and communities, as well as the government, have bases for ambiguous attitudes towards the Roma, as the ‘Other’. Then, there is the mythology of the Roma as criminal. 19th centu ry pseudo-science, such as phrenology, suggested that they were inevitably and uniformly liable to engage in criminal behavior. On the other hand as Goodwin notes, the experience of the criminal justice system itself can cause people to become criminal in their behavior . It is also possible that attitudes towards the Roma become self-fulfilling. Because the Roma lack an effective transnational cultural identity that can rally them to advocate for themselves, they face particular challenges. The issue of space and location is particularly important for them. Roma families often appear to be excluding themselves from what would seem to be helpful resources such as, to take just one example, school. This may reflect complex concerns, for example, that schools impose local, non-Roma norms on their kids, and risk deracinating the Roma tradition5. This has a knock-on effect on employment readiness, and reinforces local reluctance to hire Roma. Whenever Roma activities intersect with non-Romas’ lives, the response is to exclude; socially, legally, physically. The celebration of diversity by European communities seems honored only by exception and in isolation rather than reflexively or consistently throughout soc iety. Psychologists have attributed this difference to many areas, such as personality traits, differing views of conformity, social status, and situational forces. The following research and studies illustrate the findings which confirm this hypothesis. Personality Traits of Men vs. Women According to Eagley, Wood, and Fishbaugh (1981), women are more concerned than men about the quality of interpersonal relationships. Women take greater responsibility for establishing and maintaining interpersonal bonds, whereas men do not. Also, women are more empathetic and more accurate at decoding nonverbal communication than males. Male gender roles also claim that men should remain independent and not agree closely with others, while it is seen as acceptable for women to conform to group behaviors. According to the studies by Maslach, Santee, and Wade (1987), part of the masculine gender role is to be independent and assertive, therefore leading males to conform less. Professional: you may need to support or help others with things such as planning or you may be asked if others can observe you while working with students. Emotional: it is important to support others through day-to-day events by keeping a sense of humour. The main elements to building relationships with children and adults in any situation are if others are comfortable in your company as they will be more likely to communicate effectively. If people don’t get along or feel uneasy around each other they tend to avoid each other whenever possible and so relationships don’t develop. Younger children may need more reassurance especially if they have only just started school, which may result in them need more physical contact. As children grow up and become more mature they may need more help when talking through issues or reflecting on their thoughts. You need to remember to adapt vocabulary used and consider repeating what you have said when speaking with younger children to make sure they understand what you have talked about. You need to act more sensitively towards children who have communication difficulties, such as partial hearing, as they will need to take their time and feel comfortable when speaking. Some children may not be nervous when speaking so you will need to change the way in which you communicate to make sure that it suits their individual needs. If they have a speech disorder like a stammer or tourettes which can make it difficult for them, you need to allow them to take their time and not rush them. It is also important to try and not fill in words for them or guess what they are trying to say as this could add to their nervousness and may make their speech disorder worse or make them lose confidence in themselves. Additional training is a good thing to consider to help you be able to communicate effectively with the students. In some cases when children have special educational needs you may have to have additional equipment in order to communicate with each other such as hearing aids and microphones. There can be many similarities when communicating with adults, children and young people, such as always remembering to maintain eye contact, responding to what they have said and treating them with respect. However when communicating with children and young people you also need to think about the relationship with their parent/carer and what that means in a school context. No matter how well you get on with the person you must always remember that they need to see you in a professional way and that your relationship with them will always need to be that way when in school. Whenever you communicate with children and young people you need to make sure your very clear in what you say. They rely on teachers to communicate clearly to them what is expected of them, so that they can communicate well for themselves. You should not use over complicated language which could confuse them or long lists of instructions which can make things difficult for them to grasp. As adults, you need to show children and young people how to get along and communicate with each other positively. You also need to show behaviour that you expect from them. If you can show the students that you value and respect others around you they are more likely to show the same behaviour towards adults and other students. Children copy the adult behaviour around them from an early age regardless of if its positive or negative behaviour being exhibited.
